Why this vehicle matters
The OBS (Old Body Style) F-150 is the quintessential American truck. It's what people picture when they think 'pickup.' The 1987 redesign added aerodynamics without losing the truck's essential character.
The 300 cubic inch inline-6 is legendarily reliable — truckers call it the 'big six' and swear by it. The XLT Lariat trim added carpet, power everything, and enough creature comforts to make the wife happy. This is the working truck that could also be the family vehicle.
Patina notes
Mine is the definition of honest patina. Paint faded to a comfortable matte. Dents that tell stories. A bed that's actually been used for hauling. These trucks look right when they're worn. The chrome and brightwork dulls gracefully.
Avoid the 'restored to better than new' examples — they miss the point. An OBS Ford is meant to be used.
Ownership reality
Maintenance is shade-tree simple. The 300 six runs on anything, survives everything, and can be rebuilt in a weekend. The 302 and 351 V8s are equally well-supported. Parts are everywhere, cheap, and interchange across years.
The E4OD automatic has quirks but is manageable. Yes, the fuel economy is terrible. Yes, it drives like a truck. That's the point. Keep the rust away and it'll outlast you.
