Why this vehicle matters
The Samurai proved that small doesn't mean incapable. At barely 2,000 pounds with proper 4WD and low range, the Samurai could go places that heavier trucks couldn't reach. Consumer Reports' rollover controversy nearly killed it in America, but the Samurai was vindicated — it wasn't more dangerous than comparable vehicles. The lightweight platform created a cult following among off-roaders who appreciated what less weight and tight turning could accomplish on trails.
Patina notes
Samurais were trail toys and should show it. The body dents from tree strikes. The soft top ages and fades. The roll bar shows evidence of actual rolling (some enthusiasts consider this a badge of honor). These were never precious vehicles — they were tools for going places. Let them look like they've been places.
Ownership reality
The 1.3L engine is reliable but underpowered for modern traffic. Many owners swap in GM engines or add turbochargers. The 5-speed manual is tough. The solid axles and simple 4WD system are easy to maintain and upgrade. The aftermarket is strong for suspension lifts and trail modifications. Daily driving is marginal; trail capability is exceptional for the size and price.
The verdict
Buy if
You want maximum trail capability in minimum size. You're comfortable with slow highway speeds. You appreciate that light vehicles go places heavy ones can't.
Skip if
You need highway power. You want a comfortable daily driver. You can't embrace the rollover controversy debates.
