Why this vehicle matters
The 280ZX took the Z car into the '80s with a cushier, more refined approach that purists hated and buyers loved. It was Motor Trend's Car of the Year in 1979. The turbo model brought real performance back, making this the first forced-induction Z car. Critics called it too soft, too heavy, too GT-focused — but it sold like crazy and brought a new generation into the Z fold. This is the Z car you could take on a road trip without your kidneys filing a complaint.
Patina notes
T-top cars leak — it's not a question of if, but how much. The resulting rust shows up in the floors, trunk, and rear quarters. The '80s styling (digital dash, squared-off body) is either peak period charm or dated depending on your perspective. The L28 engine develops a lovely patina in the engine bay — age-appropriate oil seepage is character.
Ownership reality
The L28 engine is bulletproof and well-supported by the Z car aftermarket. Parts are readily available, and the turbo setup is relatively simple compared to modern forced-induction systems. These cars are appreciating but still attainable — the window is closing on cheap Z31s but 280ZX values have room to run. Daily driver? Absolutely, with modern tires and maybe upgraded brakes.
The verdict
Buy if
You want a usable classic sports car that won't bankrupt you. You appreciate '80s GT aesthetics. You can live with T-top leaks or want a fixed-roof car.
Skip if
You're a Z car purist who thinks 240Z is the only true Z. You need creature comforts beyond what 1981 could offer. You hate pop-up headlights (okay, this one doesn't have those — you're thinking 300ZX).
