Indian

United States · Founded 1901

America's first motorcycle company. Before Harley was a household name, Indian was already winning races.

Heritage

Founded in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1901 — two years before Harley-Davidson. Indian dominated early American racing and set speed records that stood for decades. The Chief, with its skirted fenders and deep-valanced bodywork, became the visual definition of an American motorcycle. Indian folded in 1953 after a series of mismanagement disasters, but those original machines remain some of the most sought-after vintage bikes on the planet. The modern revival (Polaris, 2011) trades on the name, but the real Indians are the ones with suicide clutches and hand shifts.
