Subaru

Japan · Founded 1953

The quirky Japanese brand with boxer engines and all-wheel drive before anyone cared about either. From the Brat to the WRX, Subaru built cars for people who don't follow the crowd.

Heritage

Subaru started as an aircraft manufacturer, which explains the boxer engines — they're flat like airplane engines for a lower center of gravity. For decades, Subaru was the car for farmers, hippies, and people who lived where it snowed. The Brat was a pickup truck with seats in the bed — a tariff loophole that became a cult classic. AWD was standard when everyone else still charged extra for it. Subaru built its reputation on going where other cars couldn't, driven by people who didn't care what was cool.
